Secondary Glazing for Period Windows

Surrey – Granary Cottage

Stepping away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, this project took us to the rural setting of the Surrey, where the client wanted to better insulate their home against heat loss and had identified his existing old box sash windows as the biggest contributing factor to the problem.

With this being a Grade II listed building, replicating the existing primary windows was not an option, but in this case the original primary box sash windows were in good condition, although the limited thermal performance was from only having a 4mm float glass panel.

The existing windows were finished in an off-white matt paint and whilst surveying the property we discovered that this was a perfectly finished home and the finishing and finesse of the Secondary Glazing would have to be at a standard to match. The general finish of the home was in matt, with not a hint of gloss in sight, which played a contributing factor the finish of the glazing we suggested for the client.

We decided on Tilt Balanced Vertical Sliders (TBVS) with 4mm Toughened Low E glass type. The client loved the fact they could clean the back of the Secondary Glazing using the Tilt function. After carefully going through the Ral colour chart we have, they decided on Traffic White 9016 with hardwood painted finishing trims. To combat the main problem of heat loss we used a Low E coating on the reverse side of the Secondary Glazing glass. The Secondary Glazing alone reduces thermal lost energy but using the Low E can reach up to 80% reduction in lost thermal energy.

Results, Client didn’t even notice we had installed the glazing when they came in the room. That alone speaks for itself and the feedback was positive, with the client also noticing a reduction in general roadside noise.
