A Milton Keynes based homeowner contacted Arctic Glaze to discuss how Secondary Glazing could help minimise heat loss and increase thermal insulation.
Homeowners of period properties can find it challenging to minimise heat loss through their original single-glazed windows, this wasn’t an exception for Steve, a Milton Keynes based period property owner. As a result, we were contacted to design and install a slimline secondary glazing system designed to minimise heat loss and increase thermal insulation.
The 350 year old Grade ll Listed property showcases original timber casement windows. To maintain the property’s visual aesthetics, we recommended the installation of two and three-pane horizontal sliding secondary glazing and a hinged secondary glazing system to treat an external timber door.

The slimline aluminium secondary glazing frames were powder coated in Ocre Brown and White to match the colour of the original stained timber frames. To help maintain the internal aesthetics, we used lime mortar to seal around the secondary glazing where the original windows were set into uneven stone brickwork.
Where thermal insulation is a primary concern, our secondary glazing system is often installed as close to the primary window as possible, this installation method and the addition of Low-E glass provide optimum thermal insulation and will often reduce heat loss by as much as 70%. Installing the secondary glazed system tight against the primary windows delivers an unobtrusive aesthetic and prevents the secondary glazing from being seen from the exterior of the building.
Steve was delighted with the final aesthetic and considerations made to the smaller details such as using lime mortar where possible. The secondary glazing installation made a huge difference and has substantially helped to minimise heat loss.
"Outstanding service from beginning to the end. Our 350 year old Grade ll listed building is a challenge that was beyond the skill and imagination of the household brand names. Louisa provided the initial quote based on my measurements, and handled all the questions i asked promptly and with clarity. Jonathan subsequently did the detailed measurements and provided an updated quote which was very close to the original. He answered all questions and provided a high level of confidence that he was just the man for the bespoke work required. (splayed reveals, some stone, some plaster, uneven beams etc). Installed as planned over 5 days. Absolutely delighted with the windows, their fitting and the overall experience. Thank you Jonathan, Chris and Louisa. If I know anyone else who wants secondary glazing - i'll be pointing them in your direction. Cheers."
