Secondary Glazing For Period Homes

Retford – Yew Tree Farm

Arctic Glaze transforms Grade II Listed farmhouse into a peaceful and warm home with bespoke secondary glazing.

Period properties with original timber casement windows can be problematic for homeowners as they often allow heat to escape. This can create cold rooms and often leads to increased energy consumption and higher heating costs.

This beautiful farmhouse is Grade II Listed where the homeowners were prohibited from upgrading or altering their period casement windows. With the need to make their home warmer and increase energy efficiency, the homeowners contacted Arctic Glaze to understand how their range of bespoke secondary glazing could help.

Upon survey, Arctic Glaze recommended the installation of 19 secondary glazed windows with a 4mm toughened Low-E glass specification. To ensure a discreet aesthetic and minimise the visual impact from the exterior of the property, Arctic glazed advised the addition of slimline horizontal sliders and lift outs.

Low-E glass is often recommended as it reflects heat back into the room. A microscopic coating less than the thickness of a human hair is applied to the glass, this coating provides optimum thermal performance and often decreases heat loss by as much as 60%.

This project was particularly challenging as the interior of the building showcased rendered plaster which was curved around the window aperture. To ensure a finished aesthetic, Arctic Glaze individually scribed finishing trim around the secondary glazed system.

The homeowner noted that he felt a massive difference in the warmth of the rooms and an increase in heat retention. Also, the installation of Arctic Glaze’s bespoke range of secondary glazing had decreased levels of condensation throughout the property.

"Specifying the correct product and glass type is paramount to achieving optimum performance. We would always recommend a solution that has minimal impact on the sight-lines of the windows whilst ensuring increased acoustic and thermal performance."
