Secondary Glazing for Sash Windows

Edwardian Home – Isle of Wight

Arctic Glaze ltd install secondary glazing to reduce noise levels for an Edwardian home located on the Isle of Wight

Increasing acoustic and thermal insulation for homes with period windows can be challenging, this home situated on the Isle of Wight was no exception. The homeowner wanted to reduce noise from entering the property that was emitted by close-by vehicles. Arctic glaze recommends the installation of bespoke secondary glazing that was designed to provide enhanced acoustic insulation.

The Edwardian home features timber box sash windows with 4mm single glazing, to prevent noise from entering the property, Arctic Glaze installed balanced vertical sliders with 6mm toughened glass. Balanced vertical sliders are designed to work in conjunction with box sash windows as they match the primary windows’ style and function. The glazed panels are supported by durable spiral balances, which allows the panels to open vertically while holding them securely in place.

Arctic Glaze installed the secondary glazed system into the window reveal and created a 200mm glass to glass air cavity to provide optimum acoustic performance. The air cavity produced plays a vital role in reducing noise entering the home, Arctic Glaze often recommends an air cavity of up to 250mm.

In conjunction with reducing noise entering the property, the secondary glazing system will also decrease heat loss, making the home feel notably warmer while lowering heating costs.

Homeowners are installing Arctic Glaze’s range of aluminium secondary glazing as it provides a cost-effective way to increase thermal and acoustic insulation. Homes with single, double and even triple glazing can benefit from installing secondary glazing where many styles are available to complement contemporary and modern properties.

"Secondary Glazing is the perfect addition for homes that suffer from poor acoustic and thermal insulation, it can be installed within all properties including listed buildings and homes situated within conservation areas.”
