Secondary Glazing creates a quiet and warm learning environment for Southfields Adult Learning Centre.
Located in the centre of Coventry, Southfields Adult Learning Centre required a thermally efficient glazing solution to reduce heat loss. Sealing in the warmth can be problematic for properties that feature period timber windows, and this was no exception for the Coventry based Adult Learning Centre. Arctic Glaze Ltd was contracted by Granada Glazing to install 98 Secondary Glazed units, including a mixture of Horizontal Sliders and Balanced Vertical Sliders with specialised 4mm toughened Low-E glass.
Low-E glass is often installed to provide enhanced thermal insulation, and it has a specialised coating designed to reflect heat back into the room. The addition of Secondary Glazing creates a seal within the window reveal, which helps to reduce heat loss by preventing cold draughts.

Secondary Glazing is commonly specified and installed as it will substantially lower a buildings carbon footprint. This reduction in heat loss makes rooms noticeably warmer while reducing heat consumption and cost.
A mixture of Horizontal Sliders and Balanced Vertical Sliders were installed to provide a discreet and unobtrusive aesthetic. The durable Secondary Glazing system was designed to match the sightlines of the primary windows making the Secondary Glazing installation barely noticeable from the exterior of the building. Secondary Glazing is a versatile glazing system and can be manufactured to accommodate most window styles and sizes. The adult learning centre featured several large windows that were treated with Secondary Glazing measuring over 2.7 metres in height.
To help minimise the cost of the overall project, arched aluminium frames were installed with an MDF in-fill, this helped to reduce the cost while providing additional thermal insulation. Two team members successfully installed the 98 window project over a period of 8 days.
