Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing Installation

Vertical Secondary Glazing Minimises Heat Loss

A homeowner who was concerned about heat loss has opted for bespoke Secondary Glazing for their Grade II Listed Property.

The homeowner did not want to modify their primary windows, and the listed status of the property prevented any alterations or changes. So, they approached Arctic Glaze to understand how they could enhance their home’s thermal insulation with minimal impact on the original timber box sash windows. We were invited to Saffron Walden to discuss how Secondary Glazing could help minimize heat loss and reduce cold draughts.

Upon inspection of the period property’s windows, Arctic Glaze recommended the installation of Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing with a 4mm Low-E glass specification. Low-E glass is often installed where heat loss is a primary concern, as it is designed to reflect heat back into the room and deliver enhanced thermal insulation.

Secondary Glazing is often installed within period and Listed Properties, and the discreet installation will help maintain a building’s visual aesthetics while substantially increasing both thermal and acoustic performance. Secondary Glazing can be installed within Listed Properties as it isn’t classed as a permanent change. Although homeowners keep the secondary glazing in situ, if the glazing did need to be removed, it could easily be done without altering the original fabric of the building. For this installation, we installed the slimline secondary glazing frames within the window reveal. This involves fixing the secondary glazing with multiple screws through the aluminium frame and onto the plaster within the window reveal. The screws are concealed within the aluminium frame and then capped over. You can choose from either timber or PVC surround installed around the secondary glazing frame to deliver a finished aesthetic. Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing is designed to match the style and function of traditional box sash windows. The slimline aluminium frames can be powder-coated to complement your home’s aesthetic. The glazed panels open vertically and are supported by durable spiral balances that keep the glazed panel open in any given position. Our secondary glazing features integrated locks that enhance your home security and can be installed with Acoustic Glass designed to minimize noise or Low-E glass that delivers enhanced thermal insulation.

"With the winter months approaching, we see a significant increase in homeowners requesting secondary glazing. Slimline secondary glazing is a great addition for homes with traditional windows, as it will help homeowners minimise heat loss, prevent cold draughts, and reduce heating consumption and costs."
