Secondary Glazing Minimises Noise for Modern Apartments

Arctic Glaze's bespoke secondary glazing reduces traffic noise from busy dual carriageway.

Arctic Glaze specialises in bespoke secondary glazing, effectively reducing traffic noise from busy dual carriageways. Secondary glazing is typically used to enhance thermal insulation and reduce noise levels in older and listed buildings, but it can also be installed in newer properties to minimise noise pollution.

Recently, a homeowner in Manchester contacted Arctic Glaze for help with reducing the noise from an adjacent dual carriageway. Despite having double glazing, the noise from the busy road was still a major issue. To address this, we conducted a survey of the property to determine the noise levels and recommended the installation of Double Hinged Secondary Glazing with 6.4mm Acoustic Laminated Glass. This type of glass is specifically designed to minimise noise levels and is constructed with a PVB interlayer to absorb low-frequency sounds from vehicles.

To provide the best acoustic insulation, we installed the Secondary Glazing 150mm away from the primary window. We also used Hinged Secondary Glazing to match the style and function of the primary windows, particularly in rooms with large French doors that opened inwards to provide access to Juliet balconies. To accommodate these doors, we installed the secondary glazing with a low threshold, allowing the French door panel to go over the outer frame of the secondary glazing.

Overall, Arctic Glaze’s bespoke secondary glazing is a highly effective solution for reducing noise pollution in any property, regardless of its age or location.

"As roads become busier and more properties are built next to adjacent roads and railway lines, reducing external noise for homeowners can be challenging. There has been a significant increase in requests for secondary glazing in modern properties that suffer from severe noise issues. When the glass specification and installation method are correct, secondary glazing can effectively reduce external noise by up to 80%."
