Arctic Glaze was contacted by a Kingswinford homeowner to help minimise heat loss and to increase thermal insulation for their Grade II Listed Property.
Timber box sash single glazed windows provide a traditional aesthetic but often allow heat to escape and provide low levels of thermal insulation.
Minimising heat loss can be a challenge for period property homeowners that are unable to alter their primary windows, this was the case for Marc, a Kingswinford period property owner who contacted Arctic Glaze to understand how their custom secondary glazing could help to reduce heat loss and minimise energy consumption.

After visiting the grade II Listed Property, Arctic Glaze recommended the installation of Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing with 4mm Toughened Low-E glass. Vertical sliding secondary glazing is designed to match the style and function of traditional box sash windows. The glazed panels slide vertically and are supported by durable spiral balances allowing them to stay open in any given position. The slimline aluminium frames are powder coated and once installed sit discreetly behind the original timber box sash windows.
To provide easy access to clean the rear of the secondary glazing panels, Tilt-In Vertical Sliders were installed. The glazed panels tilt inwards allowing you to reach the rear of the panel.
After the secondary glazing installation, Marc had noticed a large difference in room temperature and energy usage. He commented:
"Please find attached x2 graphs from my heating thermostat - one from 28th Feb and one from last night 23rd March. On both days the ambient outside temp. dropped to 7 degrees centigrade. You can clearly see that on the 28th the room temp. dropped from 20.1 to 15.4 after heat turned off at 16:15pm. Loss of 4.7 degrees with no gain at sunrise. Yesterday, after windows installed heating switched off at 16:15 also. Room temp. dropped overnight from 18.5 to 16.4 before rising as daylight returned bringing cloudy conditions. Less loss (just 2.1 degrees) during the night with a slight gain in the morning. Graph vertical axis is 0.8 degrees per line. [14, 14.8, 15.6, 16.4, 17.2 & 18] Feeling the benefit already!
